Kickin’ it old school…by Julie Whitefeather
There are lot definitions that come to mind when someone says “old school.” One of the more unusual ones I have ever heard or read was the following:
“Cannibal, n. A gastronome of the old school who preserves the simple tastes and adheres to the natural diet of the pre-pork period.” – Ambrose Bierce
This week New Attitude talks about an aspect of “old school” gaming that new games are just starting to catch up with…

*update*
At the bottom of the patch notes for today (6/23/2008) I read the following under “General”
Performance:
A number of code changes have been made to improve client performance.
New advance video options have been added for particles. Turning down the particle settings will increase performance.
It appears that developers are listening to the complaints that fill forums and chat. Let’s hope the changes make a big difference.

New Atttiude - Lonely at the Bottom
by Julie Whitefeather
“I think what’s happening is that social networking has infiltrated every aspect of the internet, and that same is true of games. I think you’re going to see a lot more social networking aspects to games, but are they competing? I don’t think they are. Something like Facebook is entertaining, but it’s not the same entertainment that we offer. I do see more usage of them though, that’s for sure”
- John Smedley, in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz “MMOWeek: SOE president John Smedley”
I recently had a discussion with Dorothy from The Older Gamers (TOG) about this very same issue which John Smedly mentions in the quote above.

New Attitude - A Gripe Runs Through It
By Julie Whitefeather
First, my apologies for the lateness of my column this week - All I can say is “mia culpa”. When real life didn’t intervene this week I engaged in escapism to escape from when it DID intervene. This week I discuss why people quit mmos, and why some remain loyal even through a rough opening for a game.
